Applying for a PhD position

 

Requirements

The minimum requirements for becoming a PhD member of PE&RC are:

  1. Be accepted by one of the PE&RC groups as a PhD candidate

  2. Have proof of funding (appointment WU employed PhD's)

  3. Information on the ability of the PhD candidate to be admitted to the PhD programme which encompasses:

    1. A successfully completed academic training at MSc level.

      If needed, an introductory qualification examination may be required to be admitted to the Wageningen University PhD Programme. This is decided upon by the Academic Board of the University in consultation with the promotor. This exam is not credited within the Education Programme itself

    2. Proof of proficiency in the English language.

      PhD candidates from non-Anglophone countries are required to submit an internationally recognised Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language ( TOEFL or British Council, IELTS). This certificate is not a requirement for PhD candidates who have completed their higher education with English as the language of instruction. Requirements are:

      1. IELTS: 6.5 , with a minimum of 6.0 for each (academic) module.

      2. TOEFL: 580 points for the written TOEFL, 237 points for the computer based TOEFL and 92-93 points for the Internet based TOEFL. All are to be supplemented by results of the Test of Written English (academic TWE). The minimum score required for this test is 5.0

      3. Submitted test results must be dated within 24 months prior to an application to the PhD Programme.

 

Regular applications

The regular way to obtain a PhD position within PE&RC is to apply for a vacant position on a PhD student's project at one of the research groups affiliated to PE&RC. Most PhD vacancies at WUR are posted on Academic Transfer. For current PhD vacancies Click here.

 

Open applications

If you wish to do a PhD within PE&RC but there are no vacancies in your field of interest you should provide for your own project funding. Funding is needed for (1) the university fee, (2) the departmental fee (research fee) and (3) the costs of living while residing in Wageningen (for more detailed information click here. PE&RC cannot assist in finding funding sources. Websites providing information about fellowships and grants can be found on the PhD site of Wageningen University.
