Every month we put a PE&RC member in the spotlight. This month we are getting to know Saul Fernandes.
Saul studies soils ecotoxicology and the preservation of the chemical and biological quality of soils at the VU in Amsterdam. Current research includes identifying the role of soil micro-arthropods in ecosystem services and study its sensitivity to pesticides.

What are you passionate about in your research?
I am enthusiastic about contributing for the future of environmental risk assessment of pesticides. Especially when it comes to protecting soils from anthropogenic activities, something that I have always been passionate about.

What do you currently do to de-stress?
 I like run around the neighborhood or bake a cake.

What are you binging on Netflix?
I am addicted to Jessica Jones and Start trek enterprise on Netflix. The last book I read was Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring.

If you could be any plant what would you be, and why?
A Jarcaranda mimosifolia or some wisteria.

What have you been cooking lately?
I am experimenting with different variations of lemon and polenta cakes.
