Environmental Azole Resistance Meeting 2024

Thursday 14 - Friday 15 November 2024

Parkhotel De Bosrand, Ede, The Netherlands

The Environmental Azole Resistance Meeting has been held annually since 2022 between international scientists, government policy makers and agricultural industry. In these meetings, the increase in antifungal resistance in the human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus is discussed. In addition to the exchange of the scientific updates, all stakeholders are involved in smaller round the table discussion groups to debate on how these findings affect policy making and future research directions. Therefore, this meeting facilitates knowledge transfer between researchers, policymakers, and industry, all focused on tackling antifungal resistance.

Day 1 will be the general meeting including all scientific updates and round the table discussions and is open for all stakeholders (maximum occupancy of 70 people).
Day 2 will offer workshop at the campus of Wageningen University involving a new surveillance air sampling technique and how to conduct citizen science.

Scope

Exposure to azole fungicides in the environment is a major driving force in resistance selection, and multi-azole resistant A. fumigatus genotypes are globally detected in clinical isolates. To tackle this growing issue, (inter)national stakeholders including scientists will discuss best practices in both understanding the prevalence of resistance and limiting the evolution and spread of resistance genotypes. Topics include:
1. Implementation and standardization of protocols to track the prevalence of resistance in environmental populations, supported by a workshop on day 3.
2. Understanding the emergence and spread of resistance, specifically in low and middle income countries where azoles are used extensively in agriculture.
3. Designing risk assessment for introducing novel fungicides.
4. Emphasize the importance of international coordination and collaboration in combating antifungal resistance.
