Naomi Zweerus
PhD Programme Coordinator

About me
My name is Naomi Zweerus and I am one of the PhD Programme coordinators at PE&RC. I studied Biology in Switzerland, my home country, and obtained a MSc degree in Ecology from the University of Zurich in 2016. I then followed my Dutch roots and moved to the Netherlands, to pursue a PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam. The PhD project nicely combines my passion for lab experiments and the fascination for insects: I study sexual communication and mate choice in moths to ultimately draw conclusion about the evolution of sexual signals. In the early days of my PhD, I became an active member of the PE&RC PhD council (PPC) and bridged the communication between the graduate school and the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) in Amsterdam. The council work contributed significantly to my integration in the Netherlands and provided an excellent counterbalance to my PhD life. I enjoyed working as a team in the council and I could identify with the PE&RC philosophy. In October 2019, Claudius and Lennart asked me if I want to become part of their team of Programme coordinators. Based on the valuable and highly motivating experience in the PhD council, I decided to start working part-time as PhD programme coordinator in November 2019, while proceeding with my PhD thesis. Together with the PE&RC team, I make sure the graduate school offers state-of-the art education for postgraduates. My motivation is to contribute to the future success of PE&RC.
