Plants emit a variety of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that play an important role in their interactions with the biotic and abiotic environment. So far the biology of plant VOCs has generally been investigated in separate contexts, such as abiotic stress, or biotic stress, or at the level of subcellular mechanisms such as biosynthesis or at the level of ecological interactions between community members. In recent years, however, plant VOCs have increasingly been investigated at different levels of biological integration in a concerted way, giving rise to a molecular ecological approach to the function of plant VOCs.
The goal of this course is to integrate approaches at different levels of biological organization and provide PhD students with a stimulating environment to develop ideas on a comprehensive view of the ecology of plant VOCs. Leading scientists in the fields of plant biology, plant physiology, plant molecular biology, ecology, behavioral ecology and multitrophic interactions will present recent developments with the specific aim of integrating their knowledge for an audience of PhD students.

Course set-up (of last edition)

The meeting will bring together 10 leading scientists plus ca 20-25 PhD students. Invited speakers will present their work in the mornings. Afternoon sessions will consist of student presentations, followed by in-depth discussions with keynote speakers and other students. Both invited keynote speakers and PhD students are expected to attend the whole meeting as to allow for intensive contacts between PhD students and speakers in both formal and informal discussions. Speakers are requested to send 3-5 pdf’s of publications before the meeting and each student will be supplied with the pdf’s of one speaker to prepare for leading the discussion with the keynote speaker.
