Scope
Geostatistics is concerned with the analysis and modelling of spatial variability. It also addresses how quantified spatial variability can be used in optimal spatial interpolation and spatial stochastic simulation. Fields of application include hydrology, soil science, ecology, geology, agriculture, and forestry. This course aims to provide PhD candidates with a solid background in standard and more advanced geostatistical methods, such that they can apply these in their own research. The course is a mix of theory and practice, with case studies that are analysed using R and contributed geostatistical packages. Course material: Diggle, P.J. - P.J. Ribeiro Jr. (2007), Model-based Geostatistics (Springer, for wur-participants free pdf available for download, for others book available through PE&RC for € 75,- - limited amount available, first come-first serve).
Programme
- Day 1, morning: Lectures and exercises on spatial variability
- Day 1, afternoon: Spatial data in R & spatial variability + inventory of topics for Friday morning
- Day 2, morning: Lectures and exercises on kriging (ordinary kriging, indicator kriging, block kriging, area to point kriging)
- Day 2, afternoon: Computer lab on kriging
- Day 3, morning: Lectures and exercises on universal kriging and spatial stochastic simulation
- Day 3, afternoon: Computer lab on universal kriging and spatial stochastic simulation
- Day 4, morning: Lecture and exercises on model-based geostatistics
- Day 4, afternoon: Computer lab model-based geostatistics
- Day 5, morning: Selected topics
- Day 5, afternoon: Course evaluation + Sampling design contest + drinks and snacks

| Options for accommodation | Accommodation is not included in the fee of the course, but there are several possibilities in Wageningen. For non-WUR PE&RC members 50% of the accommodation costs can be reimbursed with a maximum of €30,- per night. For information on B&B's and hotels in Wageningen please visit proefwageningen.nl. Another option is Short Stay Wageningen. Furthermore Airbnb offers several rooms in the area. Finally, there are a number of groups on Facebook where students announce subrent possibilities and things like that. Note that besides the restaurants in Wageningen, there are also options to have dinner on Wageningen Campus. |
