R and Big Data

Scope
For this course a basic understanding of R is required: this is not a course to learn R. The main purposes of this course can be summarised as:
- Introduction to Big Data and the similarities and differences between regular modelling approaches and big data modelling
- Understanding of possibilities and limitations of R in big data research
- Introduction to high performance computing (HPC)
- Reproducible research
The aim of the course is to help experienced R users to tackle the problems they face when analysing big data sets. The course will consist of a mixture of lectures and computer labs (in a ratio of approximately 60/40), so there is plenty of time for hands-on exercises.
Tentative Programme
- Day 1, morning: Big Data (data, case studies, workflow), Profiling and Efficient Programming (part I)
- Day 1, afternoon: Profiling and Efficient Programming (part II), Reproducible Research
- Day 2, morning: Big Data R memory issues, Parallel and High Performance Computing
- Day 2, afternoon: Big Data AnalysesL a case of Machine learning (part I & II)

| Options for accommodation | Accommodation is not included in the fee of the course, but there are several possibilities in Wageningen. For information on B&B's and hotels in Wageningen please visit proefwageningen.nl. Another option is Short Stay Wageningen. Furthermore Airbnb offers several rooms in the area. Finally, there are a number of groups on Facebook where students announce subrent possibilities and things like that. Examples include: Wageningen Room Subrent, Wageningen Room Sublets, Room Rent Wageningen, and Wageningen Student Plaza. Note that besides the restaurants in Wageningen, there are also options to have dinner on Wageningen Campus. |
