Much attention has been given to the topic of resilience in our agricultural systems, both in terms of reducing our current dependency on chemical inputs for primary production as well as preparing for the effects of climate change. However, less attention has been paid to the topic of plant breeding for more diverse cropping systems, like for example mixed cropping or intercropping, which will require new approaches and traits to be targeted in the breeding process. The CropXR initiative aims to develop new tools for the breeding sector to develop resilient crops through data-driven design. In this workshop we will combine a programme of inspiring talks with a discussion session to develop a focused research agenda to address the key challenges facing the breeding sector to breed for more biodiverse cropping systems.
